Taekwondo can empower women and girls to be the best they can be!

Benefits of taking up Taekwondo for Women.

Taekwondo has many benefits for women and girls. This covers a wide range of areas, such as physical health, mental well-being, social interaction/development, educational opportunities, empowerment and even self-defence.  Regular physical activity will help reduce risk of cardiovascular diseases. Studies have shown that women who participate in sport will lower blood pressure, improved heart function and reduced cholesterol levels. The mental health benefits include reduction of anxiety and depression due to the release of endorphins during exercise which helps elevate mood and improve emotional well-being. Taekwondo will also be able to help in the reduction of stress and improvement of self-esteem. From a social interaction, sport will help women and girls build friendship, social networks and help foster a sense of community.

Taekwondo is also good for girls and women who want to improve their self-defence skills. Developing self-defence and self-awareness skills can be the difference between positive and negative outcomes.

Being safe isn’t all about being able to fight and overpower an attacker, by being aware of your environment and mastering some self-defence techniques you can help yourself be and feel safer.

Words of Wisdom

Sarah Stevenson – President & Board Member at British Taekwondo and Olympic Medallist

World Taekwondo President Chungwon Choue, British Taekwondo's President Sarah Stevenson MBE, and GB Taekwondo Chief Executive Officer Paul Buxton

“Growing up with Taekwondo in my life put me in a unique situation that few girls were in at the time. There was and might possibly still be a stigma around girls doing a combat sport.

Being a female in a contact sport absolutely made me stronger, created a resilience within me that I never knew I was capable of and changed my life for the better.

I don’t know where or who I would be without walking into All Stars Taekwondo club at 7 years old. I am forever grateful to my parents for pushing me out of my comfort zone and for Gary Sykes for realising that a girl can achieve incredible results in a male dominate environment”

Jane Bedford – World Champion, Para Poomsae Performance Athlete

For many of us Taekwondo offers not just enjoyment but health benefits and extended family too.  For me this has extended beyond just my Club, and I very much feel part of the GB Para family too with whom I have been able to share memories that will truly last a lifetime with many of them.

What I love about Taekwondo is that it transcends boundaries regarding age and gender.  The classes that I attend have a real mix of students and everyone is accepted for who they are”

“During your time training, things do happen and remember “this is part of training and is not a reflection of your ability overall””
