British Taekwondo are the National Governing Body for the Sport of Taekwondo in Great Britain.
We are the representative member of, and recognised by, World Taekwondo, the international governing body for taekwondo as recognised by the International Olympic Committee and the International Paralympic Committee. We are also the representative member of the British Olympic Association (BOA), the British Paralympic Association (BPA) and the European Taekwondo Union (ETU).
Established in 1982, British Taekwondo is involved in Taekwondo from grassroots to the elite level. We are responsible for the selection of International and Olympic level National Teams, as well as empowering local clubs; working with athletes, referees, officials and instructors to support the growth of Taekwondo across the country.
Over 40 years later, more and more people are experiencing the enjoyment of Taekwondo and we have grown to over 500 clubs nationwide.
What we do
British Taekwondo plays a central role in the development, regulation, and promotion of Taekwondo across the country, with the impact of the work we do impacting all of the Taekwondo community.
We oversee the rules, standards, and structure of World Taekwondo (Olympic-style) Taekwondo in the UK, ensuring clubs, coaches, and practitioners operate within safe, fair, and ethical guidelines.
On a grassroots level, we support the growth of Taekwondo by helping new clubs form and thrive, with resources, education, training, and guidance to help coaches and volunteers deliver quality sessions.
We also take all the necessary precautions to ensures a safe and inclusive environment for all members, with strong safeguarding and welfare policies. Taekwondo is a sport for all, and we continue to promote equality, diversity, and inclusion in all areas of the sport.
This all plays into our wider goal of encouraging youth participation and wider public engagement with the sport, and helping as many people as possible enjoy the benefits of regularly activity on physical and mental wellbeing.
We also run events on a national and international scale, with National Championships the pinnacle of the year for many, while also developing our national squad in the hope of earning medals on the international stage.
Who we do it for
At British Taekwondo, everything we do is for the people who make up our diverse and passionate Taekwondo community across the UK.
From the members who are just starting their Taekwondo adventure at their local clubs, to the coaches and instructors that make the community so special, engaging and welcoming, we aim to be there for each and every person affiliated with us.
We achieve this through education, training and building a strong framework across the UK, while also providing pathways for athletes who aspire to compete at the elite level of the sport.
Helping our local clubs become positive, sustainable spaces where people can connect, stay active, and thrive is pivotal to what we do, as well as ensuring members are in a safe, structured, and inspiring environment to develop confidence, discipline, and physical skills.

We are the united voice of Taekwondo across the UK, and it is our responsibility to make sure the sport stays strong, and is united both nationally, and on the international stage.

Why work with us?
After being recognised as World Taekwondo Member National Association of the year 2023, British Taekwondo continues to bring together the Taekwondo community together, and grow as a whole.
Having recently been recognised by all of the Home Nation Sports Councils as the governing body for Olympic and Paralympic WT Taekwondo across the UK, it marks an exciting time for the organisation, with National Championships, International Opens and Grand Prix events all on the horizon over the next two years.
With unprecedented success within the Poomsae community at the recent European Championships, the future is bright for the sport, and we continue as an organisation to help those within the community to thrive.
