Didcot’s Phoenix Taekwondo has always had very strong links through its members with some of the biggest science facilities in the world. Now the club features on an Amazon Prime documentary about the race for nuclear fusion and clean energy at the JET (the Joint European Torus) facility in Culham, Oxfordshire.

3rd Dan Black Belt Dave Keeling is the JET Deputy Task Force Leader helping to set the high-level goals for fusion experiments that could one day pave the way for clean, limitless energy on the Earth, and is now the star of Amazon Prime’s Star Makers 2.

This documentary takes you behind-the-scenes at JET during its final year of awesome scientific operations, following the dedicated scientists and engineers as they push the boundaries of fusion research, but also takes the time to explore the human stories behind the ground-breaking work.

As part of the documentary, a film crew visited Phoenix Taekwondo to see how Dave, wife Jo and children Eva and James – all Phoenix Black Belts – relieve the stress and pressure of working on such a critical experiment.  The film crew took footage of the Phoenix Black Belt Academy as well as interviewing Dave and his family, with the class being featured in the TV documentary.

Dave says that Taekwondo gives him an escape, the chance to do something completely different away from his important work. His wife Jo, knows the time pressure Dave can be exposed to and agrees that “Taekwondo is a great way to relieve the stress of work when we can just go and kick things”.

The Star Makers 2 “JET’s Quest for Fusion Energy” TV documentary is available on Amazon Prime and the Phoenix Black Belt Academy is featured as part of Dave’s interview from around the 27-minute mark.

The TV documentary highlights the value Taekwondo provides both as a means of stress relief and positive mental health and well being.
