
There was plenty of drama and outstanding action on Day One of the 2025 British Taekwondo National Kyorugi Championships, with a sold out crowd providing an electric atmosphere at EIS Sheffield.
The technique, precision and respect on show was paramount throughout, with plenty of high points to reflect on from the pulsating day of drama in Yorkshire.
A total of 71 athletes won gold in their respective weight categories, with NTC excelling as nine of their athletes were named National Champion, with a further 12 medalling across the day.
That performance was enough to see the club, run by Mark Moores, claim the Advanced Team Award on Day One, with similar stellar performances from Apex Taekwondo and Kixstar Dragon Taekwondo, who finished second and third respectively.
There were plenty of high calibre contests across the venue during Saturday’s competition, as the Kyorugi community came together to compete for the honour of being named the best in the country in their weight division.
36 separate clubs finished the day with a National Champion among their ranks, including the likes of Black Adder Allstars (Theo Mansley, -29kg Male), Raw Taekwondo Scotland (Robbie Fingland, -44kg Male), and Evolve Taekwondo (Diegu Ananta, -36kg Male).
Among the NTC contingent to strike gold were Sariah Lamotte-Kwarteng (-32kg Female), Sam Taylor (-48kg Male), Zaac Quah (-33kg Male), as well as Harry Callender (+65kg) who continues to excel on the big stage this year.
Mia Parn (-55kg Female), Oakley Wright (-74kg), Pameer Kakar (-49kg Male), Alex Sherratt and Ismail Abedlazim (-80kg Male) also ended the day as National Champions, with a number of strong performances throughout.
British Taekwondo Cadets stars Josh Sherratt of (-37kg Male, BTS North) and Luis Harrison (-41kg Male, Quest Taekwondo) continued to show their class with top prizes in their respective categories, while fellow national team representatives Rocco Harbisher (-45kg Male, Coulby Sport) and Gabriella Pettigrew (-33kg Female, Core Taekwondo Academy) also demonstrated their talents to finish top of the pile against competitors from across the country.
Fellow Cadets Namyaah Singhal (-51kg Female, Peak Performance) and Christina Creighton (+59kg Female, Liverpool Elite) also shone in Sheffield, while representatives of the British Taekwondo U21 Team were also in action, with Fabio Carvalho (-51kg Male) contributing towards Kixstar Dragon’s strong team performance with a gold medal.
Beth Christy (-62kg Female, Aspire Taekwondo), Gina Bene-Hamill (-49kg Female, WTA Apex Taekwondo) and Lily Kingsley (-53kg Female, Passion TKD) all also produced the goods on the national stage, setting them up for the European Taekwondo U21 Championships later this year.
Every single one of the competitors in the 410 bouts across the day can be incredibly proud of their efforts. With a packed out crowd behind them, there will have been plenty of memories made that will last a lifetime.
Attention now turns to Sunday’s action, where the Novice, Veteran and Para athletes get their chance to compete for the honour of being National Champion.
