National Kyorugi Day Two

The second day of the British Taekwondo National Kyorugi Championships provided plenty of quality competition, with players from across the community competing throughout the day at EIS Sheffield.

Novices and Veterans were taking to the mats in Sunday’s action, with first-time competitors mixing with seasoned athletes in a fine spectacle of Kyorugi competition.

A further 85 gold medals were handed out throughout the day, making it a grand total of 156 National Champions named across the weekend, while we also had the first ever Para rules fights in the history of the Kyorugi National Championships, as Imogen Broxholme of Passion Taekwondo took home gold in the K44 classification.

NTC also took home an additional piece of silverware by earning themselves the Overall Team Award from across the two days of bouts, while Aquila Taekwondo earned the Novice Team Award, with the stars of tomorrow shining through.

61 separate clubs will be returning home with a Nationals medallist among their ranks, with 38 of those able to say they are home to a National Champion for the next 12 months.

The likes of Ayub Besong (-68kg Male Junior, Empsi Taekwondo), Olusijibomi David Obadofin (+87kg Senior, Bangtan Taekwondo) and Derry Brewerton (-26kg Female, Roar Taekwondo) did their clubs proud by taking home a gold medal, as well as Sophia Sullivan (Female -55kg, F.I.R.E Taekwondo Academy) and Arena Moradi (-24kg Female, PTC).

The competition was continuing thick and fast as the day progressed, with Aquila Taekwondo and LMC locked at the top of the Team Leaderboard for the honour of earning the Novice Team Award.

In the end, it was the London-based side that ran out winners by just two points, with six golds and eight bronzes earning them top spot, with their Southampton counterparts earning three gold, four silver and nine bronze.

Byron Pakes (-53kg Male), Wren Costerton (-41kg Female), Maksym Kryvylo (-78kg Male) all earned themselves a National Title to contribute towards the Team victory for Kuzey Akses and Terry Cooper’s club, while Edirin Alawuru (-59kg Female), Aselia Aliusheva (+73kg Female) and Joris Plauska (+30kg Male) also proved themselves to be stars of the future in their categories.

It wasn’t to be for LMC, who had plenty of skilful players taking to the mats throughout Sunday’s action, with Joshan Sohal (-26kg Male), Aaliya Ahmed (-20kg Female) and Kim Le the three to take gold on the day.

Having claimed the Advanced Team Awards on Day One, it was Mark Moores’ NTC who claimed the Overall Team Award as play came to a close, with a further six golds on Sunday adding to the nine picked up in the previous day’s play, with 31 total medals across the two days.

The day was also special for Passion TKD’s Immie Broxholme, who became the first ever Para gold medallist at the British Taekwondo National Kyorugi Championships, as the K44 classified athlete competed in the first ever Para rules fights in the prestigious event.

The 14-year-old competed in two fights throughout the day, and excelled on the big stage to win both of her bouts, with a gold medal to her name just seven months after taking up the sport.

Immie’s achievement added to what was an incredible weekend of action in Sheffield, with over 650 fights taking place across the weekend, and 156 new National Champions named.
