Preparing for a National Dan Grading is one of the most significant milestones in a Taekwondo student’s journey. It demands technical precision, confidence under pressure, and a deep understanding of the assessment criteria. At British Taekwondo, we are committed to supporting our membership community, instructors, and clubs to ensure every candidate feels ready to perform at their best.
As part of this commitment, Master John Stopforth, 6th Dan and Taekwondo & Education Lead at British Taekwondo, recently visited Ascend Taekwondo Formby to deliver a full National Dan Grading preparation seminar. The session was designed to mirror the exact format of the National Dan Grading, giving students and instructors a clear, structured insight into what to expect on the day.
Strengthening Clubs and Instructors
The seminar also provided valuable support for Coaches Lisa Scott and Jim Scott, helping them deepen their understanding of the grading format and the expectations set out in the National Dan Grading syllabus. By working directly with instructors, British Taekwondo ensures that clubs across the country are equipped to guide their students effectively through the preparation process.
This collaborative approach strengthens the entire Taekwondo community; building consistency, confidence, and shared standards across all clubs.
Throughout the session, students were taken step‑by‑step through the full grading structure, including Poomsae, sparring, self-defence and technical application, as well as outlining the assessment criteria for the National Dan Grading.
While a Dan Grading can be one of the most exciting and proud days of a Taekwondo student’s life, there can be plenty of nerves that come with the big day. By hosting this seminar, British Taekwondo left students feeling empowered to perform with confidence and clarity at the National Taekwondo Centre on Sunday 14th June.
Ascend Taekwondo shared the following feedback:
“All of the students thoroughly enjoyed themselves and found the seminar incredibly useful and informative. The support given throughout the session, especially with sparring, self-defence, and Poomsae, really helped build confidence in preparation for the National Dan Grading.
“Having everything broken down step-by-step made a huge difference and really helped ease the nerves of all the students grading this year. It was fantastic to see everyone learning, improving, and growing in confidence throughout the seminar.”
This is exactly the kind of impact British Taekwondo aims to create by supporting clubs, empowering instructors, and helping students achieve their potential.
