As part of the build-up to the 2024 Poomsae World Championship in Hong Kong, British Taekwondo athlete Renée Marshall participated in a special training camp led by top international coaches. One of the sessions, led by Yolanda Ubero (Spain’s National Poomsae Coach) and Carolina Barros Clark (UK-IR), focused on preparing athletes for the new competition format that will be introduced at the upcoming world event, which will run from 30 November to 4 December 2024.
Renée Marshall, selected to represent Great Britain at the World Championships, had the opportunity to engage in theoretical and practical sessions. The camp offered in-depth explanations of the updated rules and competition procedures, with athletes being given the chance to clear any doubts about the new format. This hands-on training was crucial in ensuring Renée and fellow competitors could fully grasp the changes and adapt their performance strategies accordingly.
Carolina Barros Clark, a referee representing Great Britain at the camp, played a vital role. The session, which involved a coach and an international referee, gave athletes a unique perspective on applying the new rules from a judging standpoint, further enhancing their preparation for the global competition.
The practical component, led by Yolanda Ubero, allowed athletes like Renée to try the new competition format side-by-side with other elite competitors. This real-time experience will be invaluable as Renée prepares to compete on the world stage in Hong Kong, armed with the knowledge and practice gained during the camp.
This training camp was a crucial milestone in preparing for the upcoming World Championship, giving Renée a competitive edge as they head into the event with a clear understanding of the new rules and procedures.
Renée Marshall 𝗚𝗕𝗥 𝗡𝗮𝘁𝗶𝗼𝗻𝗮𝗹 𝗣𝗼𝗼𝗺𝘀𝗮𝗲 𝗦𝗾𝘂𝗮𝗱 𝗠𝗲𝗺𝗯𝗲𝗿: “It was inspiring to work with other athletes and coaches from Europe and South America, to see how different countries train in Poomsae, and learn hints and tips from other inspirational coaches and athletes, all who were happy to share their experiences with us.
It was also helpful to practise the higher patterns in the new format. Focusing on performing while a competitor is performing at the same time on the same mat is a skill I have learnt, and this will help me prepare for the World Championships.
Despite the language barriers, the universal taekwondo teachings made it an engaging and enjoyable event.”
Clare Marshall, Poomsae Coach Nomad Taekwondo: “It was so lovely to be in an environment where so many master’s and elite athletes were so willing to share their knowledge with the sole aim of improving European Taekwondo.
As a coach, I observed many new training techniques that will be extremely useful for all of our club athletes, not just those preparing for the World Championships but also for our junior athletes who are just commencing their taekwondo journey.
Looking at Taekwondo holistically, considering not just training but mental resilience, competitive strategy through nutrition, physiotherapy, and referee rules, has immensely benefited me as a coach.”
