Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Taekwondo – FAQs

Why do I need to do this course?

The landscape of coaching has changed a lot over the last decade. British Taekwondo, like all other sports governing bodies, are increasingly challenged to ensure activities are regulated and subject to professional and coaching standards. It will be the case soon that coaches will be required to be on a national register (requiring a recognised qualification) in order to practice.

The Chartered Institute for the Management of Sport and Physical Activity (CIMSPA) are leading on this massive national scheme. It is anticipated that the national register will come into effect in 2025.

Our Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Taekwondo is regulated by 1st4Sport (the awarding body) and includes all required standards set by CIMSPA.

We ask you to complete the free concussion eLearning training available through the British Taekwondo website:

You will also need to have up-to-date safeguarding training.

Before you sign-up and pay, ensure you have read the pre-course information.

The eLearning modules are:

  • Inspiring Positive Behaviour
  • Duty of Care
  • Plan, Coach, Reflect
  • Inclusive Activity Programme
  • Sudden Cardiac Arrest
  • Mental Health

How will I be assessed?

You need to attend all the tutor led sessions, achieve the six eLearning modules, complete the portfolio and produce a 20-minute video of you in action.

Once you have delivered the required six sessions, you submit your evidence (portfolio and video only) to your named assessor. They will evaluate these and then arrange a video call with you to talk through.

How long will it all take?

We expect it to take no more than six months from start to finish. Once you are signed up, you will receive information about when you need to complete things by and when to send your evidence to your assessor.

We don’t expect you to complete all tasks as quickly as possible. We recommend one to two hours a week working on your portfolio tasks.

I did the previous version of Level 2. What do I need to do?

Having successfully completed the previous Level 2, you have that qualification for life. What we will provide for you though is some learning opportunities to help you refresh and gain new knowledge. This is being scoped and as soon as we have firm details, we’ll let you know.

What are the prices to take the Level 2 course?

We take our responsibilities seriously when it comes to having correct processes and procedures in place. Having a Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Taekwondo gives you the opportunity to have a nationally recognised qualification that meets all required professional and coach standards.

At £299, our Level 2 course is extremely good value. Other sports typically charge £400-£600 for theirs.

A lot of the cost is taken up with registration fees with the awarding body, purchasing licences for the eLearning modules and tutor costs.

As a not-for-profit organisation, the surplus is re-invested into the education system in order to provide ongoing opportunities for learning and self-development.

Is Accreditation of Prior Learning (APL) available?

At the moment, this is not possible due to costs associated with having a mapping tool to validate APL.

It should be noted that although many areas of study from higher education crossover with our Level 2 Certificate in Coaching Taekwondo, the application and contextualisation of such knowledge in specifically focussed on what it looks like in real terms to our sport.
