Adult Taekwondo athletes across all levels of competition are invited to take part in a research survey exploring athletes’ intentions to report interpersonal violence in sport.

A research project led by Dr John Toner at the University of Hull, funded by the International Olympic Committee’s Advanced Olympic Research Grant Programme, is seeking to better understand athletes’ experiences and the factors that influence their decisions to report interpersonal violence.

The project, titled Whistleblowing as a Means of Strengthening Safe Sport within the Olympic Movement, aims to contribute to ongoing efforts to strengthen duty of care and promote safer sporting environments across sport.

Have your say

The online survey is open to participants aged 18 and over who take part in Taekwondo at any level of competition. It takes approximately 15 minutes to complete and explores athletes’ experiences of psychological safety, their confidence in reporting processes and their intentions to report interpersonal violence in response to a hypothetical scenario.

It also examines the factors that may encourage or discourage athletes from speaking up, helping researchers develop a better understanding of the barriers and considerations surrounding reporting in sport.

Supporting safer sporting environments

Creating a safe sporting environment means understanding the experiences of athletes and the factors that influence whether they feel able to raise concerns. By contributing to this research, eligible Taekwondo athletes can help build a clearer picture of how reporting processes are experienced and how confidence in those processes may be strengthened.

The findings will contribute to wider efforts by researchers and sport governing bodies to prevent violence, harassment and abuse, while supporting a sporting culture in which athlete welfare and duty of care remain central.
