The British Taekwondo International Open takes place this weekend (22-23 March) at the National Cycling Centre, Manchester, hosted by British Taekwondo in partnership with Manchester Active and GB Taekwondo.
Featuring over 600 athletes from over 50 countries across the two days, senior male and female athletes in G1 Olympic and Paralympic divisions are competing to earn world ranking points which will set them on the path towards qualification for LA 2028 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Athletes aged under 18 will compete in the Junior & Cadets age groups across eight different weight categories for important European ranking points.
Ian Leafe, CEO British Taekwondo said:
“Manchester is the home of Taekwondo in the UK, so it’s only fitting that we host this International Open right here and welcome our British Taekwondo family alongside international teams for what promises to be two days of outstanding competition.
For many this event will be about earning ranking points, but we want everyone to benefit from the valuable competition experience this event presents and leave with positive memories of their time in Manchester. We are proud of our reputation for hosting world class events and it is our ambition to make this event a permanent annual fixture in the World Taekwondo competition calendar.”
Councillor John Hacking, Executive Member for Skills, Employment & Leisure – Manchester City Council said:
“Manchester is proud to co-host the British Taekwondo International Open at the iconic National Cycling Centre – one of the city’s many national facilities that exemplify Manchester as a city alive with sport.
This event not only brings elite-level competition to our doorstep, but also serves as a fantastic opportunity to inspire Mancunians of all ages to try something new, get active, and experience the power and discipline of taekwondo. It’s events like these that help grow grassroots participation and continue to make Manchester a globally recognised sporting city.”
