British Taekwondo is delighted to announce the appointment of David Marshall as our new Chief Executive Officer (CEO), effective from 1st December.
David will initially work alongside outgoing CEO Ian Leafe until the end of the year, ensuring an induction and handover period is in place before Ian’s departure.
David brings with him more than 25 years of leadership experience across the sport and leisure sector, with a proven record of driving organisational growth, reform, and community engagement.
During a distinguished 16-year tenure with British Gymnastics, David held senior leadership positions including Head of Participation (Club and Facility Lead) and Director of Community.
In these roles, he oversaw the design and delivery of major participation and membership strategies that strengthened club infrastructure, supported volunteers, and helped grow national membership and participant engagement from 200,000 to over 500,000.
Beyond his executive roles, David has served as a Trustee of the British Gymnastics Foundation and has contributed to the wider sports landscape through his involvement with the CIMSPA Professional Development Board and the UK Active Wider Physical Activity Forum.
David joins British Taekwondo at an exciting point in our development as we continue to grow participation, strengthen governance, and deepen engagement across our diverse and passionate Taekwondo community.
While new to our sport, David has expressed a genuine commitment to listening, learning, and working closely with our members, instructors, and volunteers to build on the strong foundations already in place. His inclusive leadership style and belief in the power of sport to unite communities align strongly with the values that underpin Taekwondo.
Eamonn O’Rourke, Chair of the British Taekwondo Board, said:
“We are delighted to welcome David as our new Chief Executive Officer. His depth of experience in community sport, his understanding of the volunteer and club ecosystem, and his proven record of delivering growth and inclusion make him exceptionally well placed to lead British Taekwondo into its next phase.
“The Board has full confidence in David’s ability to bring fresh perspective while respecting the culture and traditions that define our sport.”
David Marshall, CEO, said:
“Taekwondo is a fantastic Martial Art sport, engaging people in physical activity, skill development, and social connection, all made possible by dedicated instructors and volunteers.
“There’s a strong foundation to expand opportunities for fun, growth, and community building. I’m excited to lead British Taekwondo and help strengthen these things.
“I want to thank outgoing CEO Ian Leafe for his leadership, which gained national and international recognition for the organisation and shaped a strategy for growth and unity. I’m committed to listening to the Taekwondo community and working together to create positive environments and experiences for all.”
Please join us in warmly welcoming David to British Taekwondo. His experience, integrity, and collaborative approach will help us strengthen our community, expand opportunities, and realise our shared ambitions for the sport in the years ahead.
