British Taekwondo can confirm that the 2026 National Kyorugi Championships – scheduled for October 3-4 – will now take place at the Manchester velodrome, following a venue change from the English Institute of Sport (EIS) Sheffield.

This is not a decision that British Taekwondo has taken lightly. However, after careful consideration, we believe that moving to this elite venue represents an important step forward in our vision to continue growing and enhancing the National Kyorugi Championships for athletes, coaches, officials and spectators alike.

The National Kyorugi Championships has experienced significant growth in recent years, with last year’s event demonstrating just how much the competition has evolved. Close to 1,000 athlete entries were received across the weekend, while spectator tickets sold out on both days, highlighting the increasing demand for one of the flagship events in the British Taekwondo calendar.

As a result, it became clear that a larger venue would be required to accommodate the continued growth of the championships and to provide the best possible experience for everyone involved.

The Manchester velodrome has already established itself as a world-class sporting venue and is well known to the British Taekwondo community, having successfully hosted the British International Open on numerous occasions. With excellent facilities, increased capacity and a proven track record of delivering major taekwondo events, we are confident that this move will be a positive one for the entire community.

British Taekwondo CEO Dave Marshall said:

“Changing venue was not a decision we made lightly, and we fully understand the impact it may have on some individuals and clubs.

“However, the need to provide a venue for the National Kyorugi Championships that can support the continued growth of the event – while ensuring we continue to offer a first- class competition experience – means moving to a world-class venue such as the Manchester velodrome will deliver significant long-term benefits for the event and for our members.

“The Manchester velodrome is a proven venue for Taekwondo competitions, including previous editions of the National Kyorugi Championships. Therefore, we’re confident that we can deliver an even better experience for everyone by combining our learnings and improving each time we bring Taekwondo to Manchester.

“Our goal is to improve our national events year on year, and as our community continues to grow across the UK, we need venues that can support that ambition. The Manchester velodrome gives us the platform to do exactly that, and we’re excited about what this means for the future of the National Kyorugi Championships.”

We look forward to welcoming the British Taekwondo community to Manchester in October, for what promises to be the biggest celebration of Olympic style Taekwondo in the UK this year.
