Pupils and teachers from schools in and around Manchester were invited to attend during the first two days of the European Taekwondo Championships & European Para-Taekwondo Championships. Almost 1,000 children and young people jumped at the chance, and along with their teachers and teaching assistants, watched elite Taekwondo close up and in person.

Groups had been encouraged to bring along their own banners, wave their GB flags and to cheer on the home favourites. The kids grabbed the opportunity to make a lot of noise and really brought the crowd to life with their chants, cheering and support during the morning and afternoon sessions.

The European Taekwondo Championships & European Para-Taekwondo Championships were the perfect place for hundreds of Manchester schoolchildren to try out Taekwondo.
For the majority of the students this was the first time they’d tried Taekwondo and seen the sport live. However, for one group this was not a new activity, but one they had been looking forward to since they began their own Taekwondo journeys at school. Ian Caldwell from Ladybarn School in Withington introduced Taekwondo into the curriculum in 2019 and pupils have also visited to train at the GB National Centre. The group turned out for the European Championships looking their best in their doboks.

Ian Leafe, Chief Executive of British Taekwondo said “It was brilliant to see so many young people at the event, enjoying the action in the main arena, waving their flags and banners, cheering on all the athletes, and then getting to have a go at Taekwondo with the team from Taekwondo Machine. Helping young people become more active is so important and Taekwondo is an excellent way to get people moving and exercising.”
