British International Open 2026 2

The countdown is almost over, with the 2026 British Taekwondo National Kyorugi Championships set to bring two days of high-energy Olympic-style Taekwondo to the Manchester Velodrome on Saturday 3rd and Sunday 4th October.

With over 900 entries confirmed for this year’s Championships, athletes from across the British Taekwondo community will descend on Manchester with one goal in mind; to compete for the honour of becoming National Champion.

From athletes experiencing the national stage for the first time to established competitors looking to add another title to their record, the Championships promise an exciting weekend of competition from the opening contest through to the final medals.

The National Kyorugi Championships are one of the standout events in the British Taekwondo calendar, bringing together athletes, coaches, officials, volunteers, families and supporters from across the country. The scale of this year’s entry reflects the continued growth of Kyorugi within the British Taekwondo community, with the Championships providing a platform for athletes at every stage of their competitive journey.

Over two days, spectators can expect the speed, precision and intensity that make Kyorugi such a thrilling spectacle, with every athlete stepping onto the court knowing that each contest brings them one step closer to national glory.

British Taekwondo CEO Dave Marshall said: “This will be my first British Taekwondo National Championships as CEO, and I am really looking forward to being part of what promises to be an outstanding weekend in Manchester. The Championships bring together so many different parts of our community and demonstrate the strength of Taekwondo across the country.

“Events such as this demonstrate the importance of grassroots sport and the role our clubs play in creating opportunities for people to participate, develop and progress in our Martial Art. Behind every athlete competing at this level is a club, a coach, a family and a wider support network that has played an important role in helping them reach this stage.

“Manchester will provide a fantastic platform for our athletes to showcase their ability, determination and passion for Kyorugi this weekend. I am looking forward to seeing the very best of the British Taekwondo community in action and to what I am sure will be an inspirational weekend for everyone involved.”

For some competitors, Manchester will represent the next stage of a journey that has already taken them onto the international stage, while for others it will be their opportunity to experience the atmosphere of a major national championship for the first time.

Whatever their experience, every athlete will have earned their place on the mats through the dedication, commitment and countless hours of training that go into preparing for an event of this scale.

The return to Manchester Velodrome also marks another important chapter for the Championships, following the continued growth of the competition and a sell-out crowd at EIS Sheffield in 2025 demonstrating the increasing demand in the event.

Manchester Velodrome, which has successfully hosted major Taekwondo events including the British International Open earlier this year, provides increased capacity and a world-class sporting environment for this year’s National Kyorugi Championships.

With the event now just days away, the excitement is building across clubs and communities around the country as athletes make their final preparations, coaches put the finishing touches to their game plans and supporters get ready to make the journey to Manchester.

The 2026 British Taekwondo National Kyorugi Championships promise to be a celebration of competition, community and the incredible commitment of the athletes who will take to the mats, with every contest carrying the possibility of a breakthrough performance, a memorable victory or the beginning of the next chapter in an athlete’s Taekwondo journey.
