Details of the Disclosure & Barring Service’s Update Service.
British Taekwondo is committed to providing the safest possible environment for the welfare of Children and Adults at Risk and has a duty to safeguard and protect all participants from harm.
Criminal Record Checks help us to provide that protection by allowing us to check that an individual has not been barred from working with children and/or adults.
The DBS Update Service
If your role in Taekwondo requires you to have a Criminal Records Check with the Disclosure & Barring Service (DBS) you can sign-up to the Update Service.
Benefits of the DBS Update Service:
- Saves you time and money.
- You can take your DBS certificate from role to role (if within the same workforce, where the same type and level of check is required).
- Organisations can carry out instant online status checks on DBS certificates that are linked to your subscription.
- The service enhances safeguarding processes.

The DBS Update Service costs £13 per year and you can pay by debit or credit card. There’s no charge if you’re a volunteer. You will need your certificate number and you must register for the Update Service within 30 days of the certificate being issued.
Find out more on the DBS Update Service website.
DBS Update Service – an applicant’s experience
The Disclosure and Barring Service (DBS) has a video that explains the process for registering with the DBS Update Service. It includes applicants’ first-hand accounts of how the Update Service enables them to re-use their DBS Certificate and avoid costly re-checks.

Safeguarding in Taekwondo
We want everyone to have the best possible involvement in Taekwondo.
We strive to make sure that everyone who takes part in our sport is safe and happy.
Everyone in Taekwondo must ensure that:
- The welfare of a child is paramount.
- Whatever their age, culture, disability, gender, language, racial origin, religious beliefs and/or sexual identity, they have the right to protection from abuse.
- Any suspicions and allegations of abuse and poor practice will be taken seriously and responded to swiftly and appropriately.
- They value children and young people and listen to and respect them.
- They create a positive culture and climate.
Our Safeguarding Policy lays out in more detail what we expect from everyone, and the action that we will take should things need addressing.
