Kevin Jervis 9th Dan

British Taekwondo is proud to celebrate an extraordinary milestone, with two members recently being awarded their 9th Dan!

Grand Master Kevin Jervis of Norwich WTF Taekwondo became the first UK-born British Taekwondo member to take the 9th Dan test at the Kukkiwon on 18 June 2025, with his 9th Dan status now officially confirmed.

In his 52-year Taekwondo journey, Kevin has attended internationally recognised Kukkiwon courses across the World, and holds Kukkiwon Class 1 International Master Instructor status and Class 1 Kukkiwon Dan Grade Examiner status, making him the only British Taekwondo 9th Dan to do so.

In preparation for his 9th Dan examination, Grand Master Jervis travelled to a number of countries across the World to meet and train under renowned Grand Masters, as he learned from some of the finest Taekwondo minds to improve all aspects of his syllabus.

Speaking about his achievement GM Jervis stated, ” The whole experience of grading at the Kukkiwon alongside some of the World’s most esteemed practitioners was absolutely fantastic and the memory of it will live with me for ever.

“Attending the Kukkiwon courses in countries such as Italy, Vienna, and Malaysia not only helped me to prepare for my test but also gave me the opportunity to engage with Masters and Grand Masters from all over the World.

“I’ve met and trained with so many talented and dedicated people here in the UK and their inspiration and commitment – especially those that have continuously dedicated their lives to the development of Taekwondo in this country –  have inspired me to keep going even during periods when injuries made it difficult.”

We also congratulate Grand Master David Bailey of Central Taekwondo Academy in Scotland, who has also been awarded 9th Dan after successfully completing his test at Kukkiwon last month, further strengthening the UK’s presence at the very highest level of Taekwondo.

GM Bailey – who continues to do great work as part of the National Poomsae coaching setup – was also recognised with a Letter of Commendation signed by the new Kukkiwon President Yun Ung-suk and presented by the Kukkiwon Vice-President Lee Jong Gab to celebrate his 45 years dedication to Taekwondo.

In addition, Harry Wake of Koryo Taekwondo Academy has been awarded 8th Dan following his test back in May, an achievement that recognises his long-standing commitment, leadership and contribution to Taekwondo in the UK

These remarkable achievements reflect decades of dedication, discipline and service to Taekwondo. They represent not only momentous personal milestones, but also a landmark moment for Taekwondo in the UK, inspiring current and future generations to believe in what is possible through lifelong commitment to the Martial Art

Huge congratulations to all of our Grand Masters for their recent achievements, you are all inspirations within our community!
