British Taekwondo’s Concussion and Head Injury Statement of Intent.

British Taekwondo, as the National Governing Body (NGB) for Taekwondo in the UK, clearly recognises the risks to its members which can be brought about by Concussion and Head Injuries.

The subject of Concussion and Head Injuries in Taekwondo is common with many other sports and activities such as Rugby, Football, Cycling, Boxing and other Martial Arts, to name but a few. It is a high-profile media topic with potential for not only lasting injury to members but also reputational issues for the sport which could have ramifications worldwide.
The UK Government, through the Department for Digital, Culture, Media and Sport (DCMS) is also playing a leading role in concussion through its Report on Concussion in Sport of December 2021.

Likewise, the International Federation (IF) for Taekwondo, World Taekwondo (WT) has introduced some strong policies, procedures and processes through its Competition Rules and its Medical Code.

British Taekwondo has already aligned its own policies to reflect those of its IF and is now aligning with UK DCMS and the Best Practices from across sports bodies.

It is the British Taekwondo Board of Directors wish to further educate, protect and manage Concussion and Head Injuries for all its members; whether they be elite players, domestic players or general club members. It has employed resources to review existing policies, to improve where needed and to introduce further initiatives and measures to protect our members.

The British Taekwondo approach will be of continual improvement based on adopting or emulating any best practice or any legislation or rules. We will share our initiatives etc.; we will work tirelessly with everyone to be seen as a leading body on the subject and to most of all – to further protect our members.
