Updates from Steve Jennings – Operations Manager of the British Taekwondo Sport Performance Department.
NATIONAL SQUAD SESSIONS
As I write we are putting together final preparations for our next squad session. This will be the 5th session we have hosted and the end of our current training theme, I will send an update to all athletes, parents and instructors in the coming weeks about the progress we have made as a unit and where we plan to go with our next block of training.
We have been very happy with the support shown to us by our instructors and their members, all squad sessions have been very well attended and whilst we have ensured they are both physically and mentally challenging it is our hope that your athletes have found them incredibly rewarding.
For those of you that are not part of the current squad but have ambition to be included. Please remember that the current group will continue to run until the National Championships which take place in September. We will then restart with a new influx of athletes that will almost certainly include some familiar faces but will also include some fresh athletes that will earn their place on the 2022 – 2023 squad by winning a medal at the National Championships.
YOUTH DEVELOPMENT CAMPS
We have secured the first couple of dates for our Youth Development Camps. These training days are aimed at any athletes with an ambition to be part of our squads in the future, it is an opportunity for athletes to build relationships with the staff team, learn the language that we use and become part of the pathway we are building.
Whilst our Squad sessions are incredibly challenging our Youth Development Camps will be ran slightly differently. The focus here is on having fun in a more relaxed atmosphere whilst teaching some basic fundamentals and improving technical skills. We hope that you support these camps in the same way you have supported our squad session. Minimum criteria are below, and here you can sign up for the 1st session which is due to take place in London.

We are really excited to be hosting these events and the fact that there are opportunities to represent Great Britain at major international championships on the line will make performances even more fascinating. One of our major objectives was to create a transparent & objective selection policy that is open to all, and these competitions allow us to do this.
The latest information we have is that the Major International Championships will be organised using the below criteria. It is for this reason that we have opened entries to our competitions using these guidelines.
Cadet World Championships
Scoring System – KP&P PSS
Categories – Height Categories (With an Upper Weight Limit but no lower Weight Limit)
Under 21 European Championships
Scoring System – Daedo PSS
Categories – Standard WT Weight Categories
***Please note that World Taekwondo & World Taekwondo Europe reserve the right to make changes to the scoring systems, the rules and to the categories used at the Major Championships.
If this were to happen prior to our selection events, we would do our upmost to make the necessary changes to ensure our selection events are run in the same format as the Major Championships wherever possible***
As always, if you have any questions or require any clarity please get in touch.
