British Taekwondo hosted an Annual Awards ceremony on Saturday night, as our community came together to celebrate one another at The Lowry, Salford.
The event gave us the chance to recognise the individuals and clubs whose dedication, passion, and achievements have made an outstanding impact on our community this past year.
From long-established clubs shaping generations of athletes to inspirational young leaders and unsung heroes, this year’s recipients truly embody the values of British Taekwondo.
We had winners from our Performance and Referee Departments, as well as our Community Awards, where members were nominated by their peers for their outstanding contribution to the British Taekwondo Community.
We will focus on the Community Award winners here, with the Performance and Referee winners available here.
Club of the Year – Scorpion Taekwondo

Based in Doncaster, Peter Adamsons’ Scorpion Taekwondo club has been a pillar of excellence, discipline, and community impact for more than 30 years. Their legacy is built on consistency, high standards, and a commitment to developing individuals both on and off the mats.
With over three decades of continuous operation, Scorpion Taekwondo has shaped generations of martial artists. The club’s rich history reflects its deep-rooted dedication to discipline, respect, and personal growth within its community.
The club places a strong emphasis on nurturing future leaders, delivering numerous leadership courses and empowering young coaches and athletes. This forward-thinking approach ensures a sustainable and thriving future for Taekwondo both locally and nationally.
2025 has been a hallmark year. Scorpion athletes have achieved outstanding results on both the national and international stage, proudly representing the UK and demonstrating the strength of the club’s coaching and athlete development programmes.
Beyond medals, Scorpion Taekwondo is celebrated for its inclusive and supportive environment. The club promotes fitness, resilience, life skills, and community unity — becoming a trusted and valued part of Doncaster life.
With exceptional achievements both inside and outside the competition arena, Scorpion Taekwondo exemplifies what it means to be Club of the Year.
Emerging Club of the Year – NeoDo Taekwondo Academy

Founded in January 2025, NeoDo Taekwondo Academy has rapidly built an inspiring reputation, blending Taekwondo tradition with modern scientific training principles. Led by co-founders Dr Emek Can and Dr Samet Şahin, the club has grown into a hub of innovation, empowerment, and community spirit.
NeoDo has created an environment where beginners, recreational participants, and competitive athletes thrive equally. Their commitment to integrity, unity, and accessible learning has already made a powerful impact on students and families – setting the foundations for a bright future.
Diversity and Inclusion Champion – Ignite Taekwondo

For the second year running, Dave and Mel White and their Ignite Taekwondo club receive this award, and with good reason. The club has continued to grow significantly, welcoming a high percentage of students with special educational needs and creating a truly inclusive environment where every child is valued.
Heartfelt testimonials from families, including the transformational journey of some of their younger members, highlight the profound difference Ignite makes. Patience, understanding, and expertly tailored support, the instructors empower students to build confidence, resilience, and joy through Taekwondo.
Whether helping a child master a technique, encouraging self-advocacy, or providing a safe space free from judgement, the Ignite team consistently demonstrates exceptional dedication.
This award recognises their unwavering commitment to inclusion – and the life-changing impact they have on their community.
Unsung Hero – Vasilis Koutrakos

Vasilis Koutrakos embodies the spirit of an Unsung Hero: resilient, selfless, disciplined, and inspirational.
Living with a challenging eye condition, Vasilis has refused to let adversity define him. Instead, he trains with unwavering determination, competes at a high level, and supports teammates with compassion and unity.
His nomination highlights the five core values of British Taekwondo:
- Integrity: Staying true to his principles, even when faced with doubt.
- Excellence: Pushing for the highest standards despite personal challenges.
- Unity: Bringing people together and helping others overcome their struggles.
- Inspiration: Showing what is possible through courage and perseverance.
- People: Putting others first — always motivating, uplifting, and encouraging.
Vasilis is a role model in every sense. He turns hardship into strength and leads through quiet, powerful example. We are honoured to celebrate him as this year’s Unsung Hero.
Young Achiever of the Year – Leyla Palser

A shining example of youth leadership, Leyla Palser has taken on key responsibilities across grassroots clubs in Manchester, inspiring young people and breaking down barriers to participation.
Through her work, Leyla ensures that Taekwondo is accessible to children from all backgrounds. Her positive energy helps foster confidence, community, and a sense of belonging – making her a valued leader and a role model for younger students.
Leyla’s passion for helping others and her commitment to inclusive practice make her a deserving Young Achiever of the Year.
President’s Award – Ian Leafe

This year’s prestigious President’s Award is presented to departing British Taekwondo CEO Ian Leafe – a figure whose lifelong dedication to Taekwondo has shaped both the sport and the martial art on a national and global level.
Ian’s contributions span decades, from strategic leadership roles at GB Taekwondo to the development of internationally recognised event standards. His work in guiding British Taekwondo over the past six years has brought stability, vision, and unity to the organisation.
Respected across the global Taekwondo community, including by World Taekwondo and Kukkiwon, Ian is admired for his integrity, humility, and genuine commitment to people. He never seeks praise – yet his influence is felt by everyone in the sport.
