It’s with great sadness to announce the passing of Dr. Un-Yong Kim at the age of 86.
Kim was the founding president of the World Taekwondo Federation in 1971 and devoted himself to helping Taekwondo become an Olympic sport. Thanks to his efforts Taekwondo has been an Olympic sport since the 2000 Sydney Olympics.
He will instrumental in helping Seoul win the right to host 1988 Summer Olympic Games and the World Cup in 2002. Kim also played an important role on the IOC joining in 1986 where he became Vice President.
In 1997 British Taekwondo hosted the Inaugural Un Yong Kim Cup (International Taekwondo Championships) at the NIA in Birmingham to celebrate the great man’s achievements
Kim was known as the godfather of Taekwondo in Korea.
