Taekwondo Health and Fitness Programme 2

British Taekwondo is in the process of developing a new Taekwondo Health & Fitness programme and needs help from member clubs and coaches.

We are very happy to share that we are collaborating with a British Taekwondo coach with a background in exercise prescription and The British Wheel of Yoga to help support and develop a unique offering for our members and the community. We feel extremely excited about the future of this new offering and the more clubs we have involved in this programme pilot, the better.

To apply to be a part of the pilot programme, please complete our online form here.

About the Taekwondo Health & Fitness programme pilot

Amy Shanahan, Club Products Development Officer said “The aim of our new Taekwondo Health & Fitness programme is to provide a unique and different offering to clubs and communities, with sessions that are easy to plan and deliver. As part of this programme, we are turning Taekwondo into fitness, with a huge emphasis on general mental and physical wellbeing. We aim to create an open, fun, and safe space, where individuals can work up a sweat, make new friends and really take the time to concentrate and work on themselves. We are also bringing elements of sports-specific yoga, mindfulness, and meditation into these sessions, and are working with external stakeholders, including a British Taekwondo coach and a British Wheel of Yoga teacher and yoga sports specialist, to ensure it fits into the sessions nicely.”

Dafydd Rowlands, Development Manager said “We feel that bringing external stakeholders into the creation and development of new products and services is hugely important, to help us drive and deliver exceptional programmes that are fit for purpose and meet the needs and wants of internal and external stakeholders. This is a brand new and exciting programme that we want you to be a part of, and the more clubs we have sign up, the better! This will also provide us with an opportunity to discuss potential additional resources and products for clubs to purchase to support its delivery, along with the official name of the new programme too.”

The aim of the Taekwondo Health & Fitness Programme is to provide a unique and different offering to clubs and communities, with sessions that are easy to plan and deliver.

We feel that bringing British Taekwondo members into the creation and development of new products and services is hugely important to help us drive and deliver exceptional programmes that are fit for purpose.

Our new Taekwondo Health & Fitness programme will be available for all British Taekwondo member clubs.

We are looking for clubs to help us pilot four 60-minute sessions, with a focus on teenagers and adults over 15 years old.

We are testing this new Health & Fitness programme to ensure it is fit for purpose, and to also ensure it meets the wants and needs of clubs, their members and potential members.

The feedback given will help us develop the programme further, allowing us to make changes as the project develops.

These sessions are a snippet of what we plan to deliver when the programme officially goes live.

To run these sessions, ideally you will need at least one British Taekwondo Club Coach who has training or experience in practising and teaching Yoga (although not essential), and an assistant/junior coach. Alongside this, we would like to create a steering group, to help us develop this programme ready for an official launch later this year.

Due to the tight timeline for the project, the opportunity to take part in this pilot will be given on a first come first served basis.

Should you meet the requirements and wish to pilot part of this new programme with us, please complete the application form and our Club Products Development Officer, Amy Shanahan will be in touch.

We would like the pilot sessions to take place in clubs across the country who meet the requirements as stated above.

There will be some online training prior to the pilot taking place. This training will be separated into two parts:

  • In the first part you will be required to watch one recorded training session each week (four in total), filmed by the British Taekwondo coach.
  • For the second part, you will be required to watch one online recorded session filmed by The British Wheel of Yoga.

You will have access to these recordings throughout the full pilot period to help you with your sessions, along with four session plan templates and further documentation to help you.

We will share this following completion of the sign-up process.

More extensive coach education resources will be added after the pilot.

We would like the sessions to take place in May, with all four sessions completed by the beginning of June. Following the sign-up process, individuals will be sent details of all four sessions and online training once available.

As part of the pilot we are creating a Steering Group to help us develop this programme ready for an official launch later this year. If you would like to be a member please include a response on the application form and we will note your interest.

Following the completion of the pilot sessions, participants will be invited to provide feedback through an online form that will determine the next steps of the programme.

Once the pilot has taken place, we will email the clubs to inform them of the general feedback and provide information regarding our next steps.

Those who wish to be a part of the steering group will also be contacted separately.

We hope you are able to take part in this exciting development. If you are, but cannot take part due to the timescales or other reasons, please do still share the information with your colleagues and networks to help us create this new Taekwondo product.
