British Taekwondo has introduced an updated Use of Social Media Policy, reinforcing our commitment to safeguarding, professionalism and the responsible promotion of our sport across digital platforms.

In today’s connected world, social media plays a vital role in how we celebrate achievements, communicate with members, promote clubs and share the values of Taekwondo. Platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, X, YouTube and LinkedIn allow us to reach thousands of people instantly. When used positively, they are powerful tools to grow the sport and inspire communities.

However, with that opportunity comes responsibility.

The updated policy sets out clear expectations for all members, coaches, volunteers, staff, connected participants and clubs regarding acceptable online behaviour.

It also helps to safeguard children, young people and adults at risk, while protecting the welfare and wellbeing of all participants within British Taekwondo.

Social media must never be used to insult, bully, harass, discriminate against or undermine others. Online behaviour is subject to the same standards as conduct in the dojang or at competition. Misuse may result in disciplinary action and, where appropriate, referral to external authorities.

Safeguarding remains paramount in all that we do, and our Use of Social Media policy provides clear guidance around communication online including:

  • Interactions with under-18s online
  • Responsibilities relating to UK Data Protection Law
  • Supporting Positive Promotion
  • Reporting Concerns

British Taekwondo actively encourages clubs, coaches and athletes to use social media to showcase success, share knowledge and build community spirit. The policy does not discourage engagement — rather, it provides a framework to ensure it is done safely, respectfully and professionally.

Safeguarding and maintaining standards is everyone’s responsibility. Any concerns regarding inappropriate online behaviour should be reported to your Club Welfare Officer in the first instance or directly to the British Taekwondo Safeguarding Team at safeguarding@britishtaekwondo.org

Urgent concerns involving immediate risk should always be reported to the police.

By working together and following the updated policy, we can ensure our digital spaces remain safe, inclusive and positive environments for everyone involved in British Taekwondo.
