Taekwondo is for all ages and not just for kids but how can we attract adults to our fantastic martial art?
Oxfordshire club Phoenix Taekwondo is celebrating a first Grading Examination for twenty new adult members joining the club during January 2024.
Bringing new members into Taekwondo is always a challenge for Taekwondo clubs with adults especially proving challenging to recruit. Last year Oxfordshire’s Phoenix Taekwondo club said goodbye to a large, vibrant group of young adults as they departed for universities across the country. The club therefore, needed to devise a strategy to recruit a new generation of adults for the class.
Getting the word out
As we entered the new year, the club embarked on a social media campaign with a very generous free training offer for new adult starters. The campaign was an incredible success recruiting 27 new adults, including 23 beginners, in addition to the existing adult cohort!
The new students ranged from young adults through to parents of children already at the class, all training alongside the current adult grades including Phoenix Black Belts. Such a large demographic and grade shift demanded an amount of rethinking in the way the classes were organised and delivered.
A new generation
However, classes were packed to full capacity and what resulted was a new friendly vibrancy and a real sense of camaraderie between everyone training in Taekwondo together. The club managed to retain 20/23 of the new beginners and the 3-month new starter offer culminated in an end of term Grading Examination with 20 participants grading for their first Yellow Stripe belt in Taekwondo.
This is just the beginning for this new generation of Phoenix adults as they start their journey towards Black Belt!
