World Taekwondo Poomsae Open Challenge – Well done Peter, Darren & Jemma!

Congratulations to Peter Johnson, Darren Naraine & Jemma Naraine who took part and secured medals in the recent World Taekwondo online Poomsae Open Challenge.

Peter took Gold in the U70 Male division in the third of the series of WT online events held over the year, beating the Italian Rudolfo Pasquini to gold in a narrowly fought contest.

Peter said “I have been training and competing over the past year in lockdown , working hard in the GB Poomsae zoom sessions and taking honours in the KTA open and online Europeans, taking Gold medals in numerous competitions and training hard for the world challenge that was over three weeks duration”

“I needed a high score to beat the Italian champion and pulled out a 7.00 performing Poomsae sipjin and Hansu in the final!”

Darren & Jemma Naraine, who are both in the GB Poomsae team took part in the Father & Daughter category, coming away with a hard earned Bronze Medal in 4th Position.

Darren said “ It was difficult to do a good job as we had 36 hours notice to film and upload our video submission. We had 1 hour before our regular class to set up and film. I am sure we could have done better if we had more time to practice and prepare, however the top 2 in our category (Iran and Mexico) were a long way ahead of us”.

This format is amazing for families who can push each other to improve. It is a privilege to compete with your children, and not something many other sports have to offer.”

“If WT run similar formats next year we will better prepare and see where we feature. However, a couple of World medals will be hard to better.”

This was Darren & Jemmas second Bronze in the World Taekwondo Opens as they also took Bronze in the Open Challenge 2 back in July.

A huge well done to everyone who took part and continued to train hard throughout the pandemic period.
