Paralympic Referee Clare – heading to Tokyo!

We are thrilled to officially announce that Clare Laybourne has been selected to be a referee at the Tokyo Paralympic Games.

Para-Taekwondo is featuring as a Paralympic Sport for the first time in Tokyo in a few weeks, and its a great achievement for Clare to get into the select bunch of 15 male and 15 female referees.

World Taekwondo have been conducting a 2 year long process to select referees and Clare has been hopping around the world to continental and world qualification events, giving up family, holiday and work time to pursue the dream of refereeing in the Games.

WELL DONE CLARE – Everyone in BT wishes you and our athletes all the best.

Also commiserations to Paul Timms and Jodie Sinden who got so close to be selected as referees for the Olympic Games happening this week, both making it to the last 50 shortlist, from which the final 30 were chosen. Like Clare, they gave up so much and spent weeks and weeks of their own time flying around the world, constantly putting themselves under pressure and the spotlight.

They should all feel immensely proud of that achievement.

All 3 were supported by the UK Sport international relations funding program, covering travel and expenses in their pursuit – so they, BT and GB Taekwondo are extremely grateful for that support.

We have so many great sport and Poomsae referees in the UK, who are now working hard to get back to training and competition. Its great to have so many International Referee role models in our sport and Martial Art, who inspire our next generation of technical officials.

Calling all retiring athletes and everyone who loves Taekwondo, and wants to get involved – that could be you ???

Why not get into refereeing?
