Over the course of the weekend the British Taekwondo Poomsae has conducted Phase 1 of the selection for the 2021 National Poomsae Squad.
Despite the current situation with the global pandemic it hasn’t stopped our performance programme as we build for the next four year cycle leading through to 2024. It was an amazing turn out, supported by over 160 athletes representing 55 different clubs over the various age categories with athletes ranging from 9 years old all the way up to 64!
Given the restrictions with the national lockdowns currently in place the selection process was conducted via Zoom, where our athletes were tested on a number of criteria, relative to their age category, including flexibility, technical ability, athletic balance and fitness, coachability and potential to improve.
134 athletes were successful, and put through to Phase 2, which will be held at the beginning of January, where they will be assessed further as we aim to develop and enhance our talent pipeline that will hopefully deliver success on behalf of Great Britain at major events including European and World Championships, whether held physically or virtually over the next four years and beyond…..
All candidates that took part have now been notified, and for those successful, we are sure they will be working hard over the festive season in preparation for the event.
For those athletes who were not successful this time, keep training and watch this space for opportunities to train with the High Performance Coaches at future Talent Development sessions where there will be further chances to try out for our National Squad programme.
From everyone at Poomsae Performance, we wish you all a Merry Christmas and a Happy New Year!
