Worcester played host to this years British Taekwondo National Poomsae Championships over the weekend of 30th November – 1st December. With nearly 600 athletes from over 60 clubs around the UK it was one of the largest and most competitive ever held with athletes all vying to become British Champion 2019.
The National Championships also served as the selection event for the 2020 National Poomsae Squad; and with expressions of interest shown by nearly 200 athletes it was a very tough selection process for our coaching team.
2020 will see the 12th edition of the World Taekwondo Poomsae Championships being held in Denmark in May. The World Championships is the flagship event within the Poomsae calendar and will see our athletes compete on the mat against the very best in the World.
We hope to build upon our success from the 2018 World Championships in Taipei where Angela Broadbent secured a Bronze Medal in the U65 Female Individual Category; as well our most successful ever European Championships held in Turkey earlier this year where our team secured 10 medals overall including three Individual Gold Medals for our European Champions Joshua Tobin (U14 Male), Ali Pourtaheri (U65 Male) and Mike Pejic (+66 Male) as well as a Gold Medal for our U14 Cadet Male Team of Alfie Harper, Joshua Tobin and Oluwatimilehin Akinrele. The medals achieved at the European Championships secured Great Britain the overall 2nd Place Male Team trophy as well as overall 4th place country.
We are pleased to announce the athletes that will make up British Taekwondo National Poomsae Squad for 2020 as we work towards the World Championships which can be found HERE.
The squad is comprised of 4 Elite Groups, with 64 Athletes within their respective individual age categories including Freestyle. From these age categories we hope to select the Individual, Pair and Team athletes that will represent Great Britain at the World Championships.
Alongside the Elite Groups we will also have a Talent Squad which represents our best up and coming young athletes who will be pushing to make the Elite squad whether for this World Championships or future major events.
There remains two further selection events for our National Squad before the Team is announced for Denmark: the British International Open which will take place in London 25-26th January; and the final World Team Playoffs which is open to all National Squad athletes and scheduled for 29th February in Manchester. We hope to announce the World Team in early March following the Playoffs.
For athletes that are interested in being involved in the National Poomsae Squad we hope to have a new entry point for the National Squad from June 2020. In order to be invited to the squad athletes should attend one of the British Taekwondo Talent ID and Development sessions which are held regionally around the UK throughout the year. Dates for 2020 will be announced shortly. We would also recommend that athletes compete at the British International Open in London next month.
