Spectacular Opening Day’s Action In The 1st British Taekwondo Open Buoyed By ETU Approval

This weekend’s inaugural BTCB (British Taekwondo Control Board) British Open got off to a flying start today as Great Britain National Team fighters Romaine Bailey (London) and Tyrone Robinson (Mansfield) both progressed through to the -58kg flyweight final of the prestigious international competition. The champion is due to be crowned at approximately 8pm this evening following all of the day’s remaining title bouts.

British interest was spread across the board in the men’s competition as -67kg Tony Grisman (GB National Team, Mansfield) and -84kg Daryl Stokes (Scorpion Taekwondo Club, Liverpool) have also progressed through to the final of the men’s competition in their weight categories. Scottish National Team’s Craig Eden will oppose Tony Grisman in their featherweight match-up.

Results from the female senior competition were no less impressive with the British National Team’s Stella Whitehead (Doncaster) featuring against Korean opposition in the welterweight final and Bianca Walkden (Liverpool) facing national compatriot Stephanie Allen (London) in their +72kg match. Caroline Fisher (Scorpion Taekwondo Club) will line up against German opponent, Nilderm Kayas, to take the title of Flyweight British Open Champion.

The ETU (European Taekwondo Union) executive council meanwhile convened in Turkey to discuss the status of next year’s British International Open. The September 2009, a month before The World Championships in Copenhagen. The 2009 event has been confirmed as an ETU A-status event, the highest possible classification, bringing it in line with the 7 other European tournaments that contribute to both European and World rankings.

Andrew Link, Operations Director of BTCB – Sport Taekwondo UK, said, “The first day’s action has been of a high standard and there have been some great matches not only featuring the British team but also from other competitors including the world’s top two teams Iran and Korea. Looking at the action we still have to come, I expect the second day to be equally competitive.

“We are delighted that the ETU has recognised the event after its first year in existence; a feat which I don’t believe has occurred previously. This is testament to the hard work that has gone in to preparing the event and the support it has been given by Manchester City Council, UK Sport Lottery funding and the taekwondo community of the UK.”

Tomorrow’s schedule, which will see Olympian Michael Harvey competing in the -62kg category, is due to be drawn following the end of play later this evening.
