Re-structured BTCB Poomsae Committee

October 2008

Dear Taekwondo Instructor/Student,

I have some exciting news regarding the recently re-structured Poomsae Committee which I would like to share with you.

First, let me introduce you the great new team we have in place and which task, beyond leading the elite technical players to higher successes, will also be to further develop Poomsae at grass root level.

We have two very experienced taekwondo practitioners who will be coaching the National Squad: Master Gemma Biescas 6th Dan and Master Stephane Roth 5th Dan. Both are very experienced and successful competitors who also have a huge experience teaching.

We are also very lucky to have the support of Grand Master Shin, 8th Dan, as Judge Coordinator. Not only is Grand Master Shin, a very successful competitor (finalist at the World Championships 2007, Medallist at the European Championships 2007), he was also elected the second best Technical judge in the World by his peers in 2006.

Finally myself, Master Derek Sumner 5th Dan will act as Chairman for the Committee. I have been close to the Poomsae Committee for a few years now and I will fully dedicate myself to the task.

1) Strengthening of our Regional training structures
As you know we have had regional structures for a few years now that offered technical and Poomsae training to all students and instructors. We have now strengthened this structure to offer more frequent training opportunities whilst ensuring that the sessions are of the highest standard.

The newly appointed coaches are:

  • Scotland: Master David Bailey, 07990807476,
  • North England: Grand Master Shin, 01618487426,
  • Midlands: tbc. In the interim, the national coaches will teach the regional training sessions
  • East England: Chan Sau, 07940105623, & Constantino Cesar, 07710452628,
  • South East England: Melissa McSorley, 077375766504,
  • South Central: Karen MacRae, 07808586838, & David Brown, 07725019296,
  • N. Ireland: Master Glen Culbert, 07815805902,
  • South West & Wales: tbc.

Dates of forthcoming Regional training sessions:

  • Scotland: 23rd November, Falkirk
  • North England: 19th October, Manchester
  • Midlands: 15th November, Hucknall
  • East England: 19th October, Milton Keynes
  • South East England: 19th October, Horley
  • South central: 23rd November, location to be confirmed
  • Northern Ireland: 26 Oct, Belfast

Further dates will be published in Kickback and the BTCB website. Alternatively please feel free to contact your Regional coach directly.

2) Creation of Regional teams and an annual inter-regional competition
A Regional team will be created in each Region. Regional coaches will be responsible for selecting and coaching theses teams. We will organise an annual Inter-Regional Championship (not open to the GB Squad) and one Region will be crowned Inter-Regional Champion. This will be set-up in 2009
Players can only be part of their respective Regional team but they will be allowed to attend training in other Regions assuming they are also attending training in their own Region. The criteria used by the Regional Coaches will be attendance to training sessions and technical standard.

Regions in England are split up as follows:
North England: Northumberland, Cumbria, County Durham, Tyne and Wear, North Yorkshire, Lancashire, West Yorkshire, East Yorkshire, South Yorkshire, Greater Manchester, Merseyside, Cheshire
Midlands: Shropshire, Staffordshire, Derbyshire, Nottinghamshire, Lincolnshire, Rutland, Leicestershire, West Midlands, Warwickshire, Worcestershire, Herefordshire, Gloucestershire
South Central: Oxfordshire, Berkshire, Wiltshire, Hampshire, Middlesex
East England: Northamptonshire, Buckinghamshire, Norfolk, Suffolk, Cambridgeshire, Bedfordshire, Hertfordshire, Essex
South East England: Surrey, West Sussex, Kent, East Sussex

3) Creation of a National B-Squad
This squad will serve as an up-and-coming talent squad – a pool of students who can be trained with the ultimate goal of becoming a member of the GB Squad. This Squad will be coached by the national coaches. Students must be 2nd Kup or above and know the required Poomsaes for their category.
Entry methods to the B-Squad:
1. Via recommendation from the Regional coaches (after approval from the National Coaches).
2. Winning the Annual Regional Inter-club
3. Medalling at the BTCB National Championships
4. Via direct invitation from the National Coaches

4) Selection Process
A new selection process for the National Squads and National Team will start next January. It will take into account results at National and International competitions. We are waiting for the European Taekwondo Union (ETU) to finalise their 2009 calendar before we can clarify which competitions will be taken into account. The full details of this selection process will be published, as soon as we have clarity from the ETU, in Kickback and onto the BTCB website. As a general principle, we will aim to take into account all A-Class competitions as well as the GB Nationals and the UTA International Open.

5) Dates for your diary
1-2 November: Seminar with M. Lee, 7th dan, former Korean champion (Milton Keynes and Gatwick)
March 2009 – BTCB National Poomsae Championships
June 2009 – Inter-Regional Poomsae Championships

Finally if you have any questions  please feel free to contact me directly, I would be more than happy to help you.

Best Regards,

Master Derek Sumner
