Sarah Stevenson faces the double Olympic champion in the quarter-final, after her bid for glory kicked off with a 3-2 victory over Jordan’s Nadin Dawani in the women’s over-67kg taekwondo competition on Saturday morning.
The bout was tied at 2-2 going into the final round, but Stevenson prevailed with a scoring offensive kick in the third to clinch the tie 3-2 and set up a quarter-final against China’s double Olympic champion Chen Zhong, who won this event at Sydney 2000 and Athens 2004..
The fight will take place at 15:45 local time on Saturday (08:45 BST) at the USTB Gymnasium in Beijing.
“It was good to get out there this morning,” said Stevenson. “It was quite tough and I made a few mistakes which let her score.
“But I am mentally tough and in the best condition, and I am pleased with the win.
“Although I face China in the next round, I am not phased. I have lots of support in the crowd and I will just stick to my game plan and look for the win.”
