Sarah Stevenson missed out on a semi-final spot in the women’s over-67kg taekwondo in controversial circumstances in the USTB Gymnasium in Beijing.
The Team GB fighter appeared to make a clean contact with a head shot in the dying seconds of the final round, but was not awarded a point, meaning the fight went to double Olympic champion Chen Zhong of China 1-0.
A cagey encounter saw both fighters receive a warning for non-aggression in the second round, before Chen scored what turned out to be the only point of the match as the round came towards a close.
Stevenson still has a chance of a bronze medal in the repechage.
“She attacked me once and got the point,” said Stevenson. “I’m gutted. I’ve got to keep my head down and fight for bronze, which is not what I came for.
“I did everything I could have. I did my best and should have won.”
