Taekwondo at World University Games 2009

Over 7000 athletes and officials are expected to descend on Belgrade, Serbia in July for the 2009 World University Summer Games (WUGs). It is currently hoped that Great Britain will have a delegation in excess of 150 athletes and officials at the event covering 11 sports, including Taekwondo, one of two guest sports at the Games.

This will be the fourth consecutive summer WUGs that a Taekwondo team has been part of the Great Britain delegation, in addition Great Britain teams have regularly attended the World University Taekwondo Championships which are also held on a biennial basis.

Belgrade also hosted the 2008 World University Taekwondo Championships where Great Britain was represented by Temi Jegede (South Bank) and Craig Eden (Stirling) and where they faced a number of Senior World Champions together with Senior European, Pan-American and Asian medallists in a very high quality field.

Sport Taekwondo UK Ltd Performance Director Gary Hall said:

“We see WUGs as an ideal Olympic preparation for our athletes; in addition to the high level of competition, they are faced with the demands of living in an Athletes’ Village and being surrounded by all of the challenges & distractions that brings.”

Any athlete interested in being considered for selection for the Games should download the selection policy and the nomination paperwork available on the BUCS website - click here for more information

The nomination paperwork should then be returned to the BUCS office by no later than Friday 10 April 2009.
