Easter Statement from Chair Jon Smith

We announced at the AGM that Shirley Stapleton and Mike McKenzie were being appointed protem COO and Technical Director respectively.

They have successfully overseen the move of the British Taekwondo offices from Mansfield to Manchester, implemented an enhanced operations system and completed the initial phase of re-engineering the HUB to make it more user-friendly for the membership. During that time we have also introduced a new team into the Manchester office; while restructuring the composition of our Board, post the departure of our previous CEO Mark Abberley. We feel it wise to continue with the current protem arrangement through to the mid-point of this year when our re-evaluation of the Board’s activities in this new environment should be complete.

We are very pleased to announce that the British International Poomsae Championships in London to be held in July at the University of East London has been awarded A-Class Status by World Taekwondo Europe (WTE), and we are honoured to be hosting a WTE Coaches Course at the event.

Sarah Jennings MBE has launched the Cadet Development Programme with Kathy Hook, Ben Shaw and Daniel Flesher appointed as National Coaches to deliver training sessions and camps. We are working very closely with WTE and are looking at the possibility of hosting the European Cadet Championships in the UK this year.

We are very aware that Safeguarding is an essential component of our Duty of Care to our membership. Whilst we have always taken every step to ensure protection and justice to all parties, we are continually reviewing all our procedures at this time and will be making further announcements shortly. Additional Safeguarding training will be made available to Instructors and Club welfare officers as well as First Aid training. Our first British Taekwondo First Aid Course was held earlier this month.

We will shortly be announcing the date and venue of the National Kyorugi and Poomsae Championships, and are delighted the 2018 Grand Prix will be held in the Manchester Regional Arena the new home of British Taekwondo.

Please continue to communicate with all, and any members of the Board if we can be of any assistance to you at any time.

In the meanwhile, may I personally take this opportunity of wishing you all a very Happy Easter.
