I’d like to wish a very happy new year to all our members, supporters and wider British Taekwondo family. 2018 is going to be an exciting time with more clubs, instructors, competitions, grading promotions, seminars and events.
We have a vision in which we will see instructors and clubs central to our policies and procedures. James Docherty will be joining British Taekwondo as Development Officer; this is an essential appointment to support clubs to grow and to help new instructors launch new clubs.
British Taekwondo is the National Governing Body for Taekwondo (WT-Great Britain). We are responsible for fostering and developing the practice of Taekwondo in the UK. We are the Member National Association (MNA) of World Taekwondo and World Taekwondo Europe. We are also the biggest Taekwondo group in the UK recognised and certified by the World Taekwondo Academy – Kukkiwon.
In 2018 British Taekwondo will sanction Poomsae and Kyorugi competitions across the country. We will also be hosting the National Championships. British Taekwondo members will participate in competitions all over the World, with our teams and officials enjoying unprecedented support. We are currently planning to host Kukkiwon Courses in the UK and also take a British Taekwondo group visit to Korea in the summer.
We will continue to work to promote Taekwondo not only as an Olympic sport, self-defence system and martial art but as a way of life which has many benefits for people of all ages irrespective of age, gender, ethnicity or social background.
We will work to simplify administration and reduce costs where possible. We will recognise and reward clubs and instructors. It should be noted, we also have a duty of care to our members and we will ensure that clubs operate in a well-governed ethical way and that they have robust safeguarding and health and safety practices.
In January we will publish a draft development plan for consultation with the membership. Also in January, we are hosting a Coaches forum (Kyorugi) and a review of the Coaches Qualification Programmes. In 2018 we will be hosting the following courses – Safeguarding, First Aid, Judges Courses (Poomsae and Kyorugi), Technical Seminars and various others.
As we are now in 2018, we must also look to the future! Later this year the WT Grand Prix will return, and in 2019 the World Taekwondo Championships will be coming to Manchester. This is the biggest and best Taekwondo event in the World and the first time this event has ever been hosted in Britain. Watch out for your chance to be involved.
We are British Taekwondo.
